Christmas Exhibition by Joensuun Taiteilijaseura

From small streams…and so on, goes the old saying. Art and cultural activities are run with little money all over Finland. In the cultural offerings of cities and municipalities, third sector actors such as visual arts organizations which enable professional cultural activities in municipalities, have great weight.

The activity of artist associations covers the whole of Finland. These associations maintain and organize exhibitions, training, courses and art lending activities, employ professionals and act as an active voice of the cultural field in their region. Artist associations enable experiences, well-being, and live art activities in their area for all citizens. And most importantly, art is born, lives and breathes through the encounters that artist societies offer with their events and exhibitions.

Joensuun Taiteilijaseura ry (Joensuu Artists Association) is Finland's fifth largest artist association of professional visual artists (in 2021) operating in the Eastern Finland region. The association is based in Joensuu, the regional center of North Karelia. The association was founded on February 25 1945 and currently has 257 artist members. Joensuu Artist Association has been a member of the Ahjo Support Society in the years 1998–2020, and in the years 2005–2020 managed the operations of the Art Center Ahjo together with the regional dance center of Eastern Finland. Starting in 2021, the association has managed the Art Center Ahjo, which has five exhibition spaces along with Finland's first, 51-year-old, Joensuu Art Lending Service. Joensuu Artists Association has 17 art and culture employees, and it is the region's largest free field art and culture employer.

Let's take care of our region's cultural offerings and cultural professionals in the future as well!
