Pia Männikkö & Tatu Tuominen:
Impressions of Landscape and Change – Helsinki Artists’ Association Media Art Exhibition at Oodi
For the seventh time, the Helsinki Artists’ Association is bringing media art to Helsinki’s Central Library Oodi. Impressions of Landscape and Change will be shown on the screens in Oodi’s lobby from 2 to 29 November 2026.
The artists in the exhibition are Pia Männikkö and Tatu Tuominen. The curators are Satu Kalliokuusi and Eeva Muona of the Helsinki Artists’ Association.
Pia Männikkö: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
The moving surface of the installation shown in the video is made by joining together dozens of emergency blankets, which are used to protect people from hypothermia in accidents and other emergencies. Blown by fans, the rippling blankets evoke a golden, shimmering sunset and waves breaking on the shore. They may also bring to mind the people who, even today, set out to sea in life-threatening conditions in search of a better life in another country.
Tatu Tuominen: A Near Approach to Immortality (Hercynian Forest)
This video work explores a lost European primeval forest. It examines how landscapes are represented and how people’s relationship with forests has changed over time. In art history, landscapes have often been depicted as perfect, complete and unchanging. In today’s ecological circumstances, such a landscape seems impossible. Human activity has reached everywhere, and landscapes can no longer be thought of as untouched or unchanging. In Tuominen’s work, the landscape is continually in the process of becoming: imperfect, fragmented and vulnerable to change.
At Oodi, media art takes centre stage. The spacious venue and excellent technical facilities make it possible to present media art in an open and accessible setting. The works will be shown as large-scale projections on the walls of Oodi’s lobby.
The Helsinki Artists’ Association represents nearly 1,000 visual artists in Helsinki. Its membership also includes many active and prominent media artists. Through its exhibitions at Oodi, the Association aims to raise the profile of media art and create more diverse opportunities for artists to make their work.
