Jussi TwoSeven :
LAYERS 2.0

Jussi TwoSeven (b. 1983) is known for his striking animal-themed paintings, which have become
familiar sights in urban spaces and on gallery walls. His works explore the fragile relationship between
humans and nature and are created using a time-consuming and complex technique in which each
colour is built up layer by layer using spray paint and stencils.

Spray paint has been a characteristic tool for the artist, who emerged from Finland’s graffiti culture of
the 1990s. It has enabled him to combine sensitive themes drawn from nature with a raw urban
aesthetic in a unique way. Developing an individual and recognisable style has always been important
to Jussi TwoSeven, and over the years, his distinctive way of painting has become both effortless and
instinctive.

Layers 2.0 continues Jussi TwoSeven’s series of works that he has been developing over the past few
years. In the series, the aesthetic familiar from his paintings is transformed into three-dimensional
form. The artist challenges himself in a way that has evolved into something new, while at the same
time forming a familiar and natural continuation of his paintings and a new way of presenting his art.
Layers 2.0 transforms the layers of paint into physical layers in a way that is both natural to the artist
and recognisable to us, while also revealing something we have never seen before.

The works, transformed into physical form, offer an opportunity to look between the layers of paint
and consider the true structure of the paintings. Might this process also reveal something unexpected
within the works, such as traces of human intervention in natural environments?

This leads to the central message of the works: the relationship between humans and nature, and
humanity’s desire to control nature and its living environment. Do carefully considered individual
pieces come together to form perfect wholes, or should we instead reflect more deeply on our
relationship with nature and strive towards more sustainable models for society, as well as more
conscious personal choices in our everyday lives?
