“In the beginning, there is an idea, image, dream, colour or emotional state from which the painting starts. Colours and shapes collide on the canvas and suggest a direction to proceed. Chance prepares space for the unconscious. When the world that opens up in the painting feels right and meaningful to me, the painting is finished.

I photograph a lot, and I print my pictures. I'm particularly interested in close-up photography: a fascinating new world opens up through a small detail.” - Marja Heiskanen
