Josef Ka:
WHITE ROOM

Kuva julisteesta.

Gallery Katariina is delighted to present the exhibition WHITE ROOM by Josef Ka 30 May –19 June, 2025. We warmly invite you to the exhibition opening on Wednesday, 28 May, from 5 to 7 pm!

This exhibition delves into the ephemeral nature of memory, emphasizing the transient quality of existence. White Room becomes a symbolic space of purification – where sorrow dissolves, memories fade, and one stands at the threshold of a new journey.

At the heart of the exhibition is a forest of fading memories: old clothes from Josef Ka’s life – from childhood to the present – transformed through a process of plastering and installed throughout the gallery as ghostly sculptures.

Visitors are encouraged to bring personal items of clothing, which Josef Ka will plaster on-site during the exhibition. These contributions will become part of the evolving installation, blending personal narratives into the collective memory-space of the exhibition.

The exhibition also features a series of paintings created over the past ten years, all thematically connected to White Room. Josef Ka will give a live performance at the vernissage. A layered soundscape, composed by the artist from archival recordings, will fill the space.

International performance, visual, and sound artist Josef Ka blends a wide range of influences – from Butoh dance to cinematic theory – with decades of nomadic world travel to create bold, highly personal, site-specific works.

Her themes range from investigating the place of the human body in contemporary society to exploring the body as a symbolic system – reflecting both human and post-human existence.

Josef Ka’s practice is deeply participatory, often inviting the audience into a space of private reverie. She actively engages not only with her audiences but also with a wide network of experimental artists worldwide. In addition to her own artistic work, she curates events and exhibitions at her celebrated underground Helsinki venue, Sauna Gallery, and teaches the theory and practice of performance art.  In 2025, Josef Ka received a diploma in art therapy and began developing a performance art therapy practice.
