Arja Sundqvist: On the Nature of Water

The various states of water are fascinating. How is it possible that one and the same substance can appear as ice on the surface of a pond, droplets on a flower petal, or as a fair-weather cloud in the summer sky?

I marvel at the delicate beauty of frost flowers on the windowpane, the stunning ice sculptures of the Old Town rapids, and the majestic ice floes drifting through the Katajanokka Canal. Winters have changed from the snowy winters of old to dreary, wet, and gray ones. Yet I cannot help but admire the raindrops clinging to the birch branches outside my window. And amidst all the everyday rush, it is good to occasionally turn one’s gaze to the sky, where clouds drift by at their own pace. Their majestic beauty offers something to admire at any time of day or year – a perfect subject for future paintings.
