Roos Hermsen: No Proper Roads
22.4.-27.5.2021

Roos Hermsen: The Chateau in the Woods, 2020 akryyli ja öljy kankaalle, 75 x 90 cm

There is a long straight road, and there are many detours and side-tracks. The paintings displayed at No Proper Roads show figures and scenes encountered on the stray paths. The works developed out of an experimental process of expressive painting combined with strangely suggestive, romantic-ironic titles. Characteristic is their ambiguity and fragmented movement as if they are sudden glimpses of a bigger narrative. Besides painting, the artist Roos Hermsen (b. 1994, NL) practices writing fiction, and she is always concerned about the relation between the image and the word.

Next to the paintings the exhibition presents the release of a new art zine called Sadehuone / the Rain Chamber. This small self-published booklet explores picturesque ramblings upon the themes of the Room and the Road. It contains drawings, paintings, collages, photos, poetry and prose by the artists Taavi Heikkilä,  Roos Hermsen, Ville Kiviniemi, Roy Licher,  Katri Paunu and Marius Rantanen. Within the exhibition the Rain Chamber can be seen as an metaphorical inner room for reflection; a night cabin to hide for the weather outside or a place to rest for the wanderer. It offers the visitor a window to some deeper, literary context of the subject matter.
