Teemu Raudaskoski: VISUAL MEDITATION (Hall 1)
“I have created a multi-sensory entity for the HAA Gallery that incorporates both image and sound. Small details of nature, such as roots and plants, slide along the walls and objects, forming living islands and creatures. Constructing new life forms through an organic puzzle is also a calming activity for me. I believe that in our world, every living being is a unique and beautiful island, and all these islands are interconnected, forming a network of life. I hope that the exhibition provides a meditative experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in its gentle and mystical world for a while.”
Appe Leppänen: Susurrus – paintings of insects and the spirit world (Hall 2)
Appe Leppänen shows paintings on linen, tie-dyed canvas, and recycled textiles at HAA Gallery. Exhibition named Susurrus depicts insect-like creatures and wasteland vegetation. You can see a flicker in the blind spot, but it disappears when you turn your head and focus your gaze. Susurrus is insects flapping towards the light?
Anglers use flies that imitate terrestrial insects that have fallen on the surface of the water. In the same way, Leppänen uses patterns resembling insects in her paintings to bring out interpretations from under the surface or from the subconscious.
Leppänen has leaded her artistic work using the pair of concepts lure and repel: ”I have chosen the concepts from the observation that luring and repelling are central functions of both the interaction between species and communication with the spirit world.”
Symbolic objects or amulets as well as plants and herbs are used in rituals to lure or repel spirits or events. Rituals have commonalities with other species’ means of communication. Plants and insects have beautiful and decorative qualities, but also poisonous and violent traits. Visually these are manifested, for example, as camouflage and spikiness. Plants attract pollinators with the help of shapes and colors, and on the other hand repel their enemies and prevent themselves from being eaten. Objects can also be used to attract or charm a spouse, as some species of birds do when they stage found objects that are shiny or blue. Leppänen has used associations arising from these matters in her work.
Appe Leppänen works experimentally in the field of painting. With her artistic work, she deals with nature connection and enchantment and recreates the experiences gained in nature. Leppänen is interested in the interaction between a physical place and a mental space, and the works depict that rather than a realistic world. Leppänen lives and works in Turku and graduated as Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Arts Academy of Turku university of Applied Sciences in 2020. The artistic work has been supported by the city of Turku.
Opening hours: Tue–Thu 12–6pm, Fri–Sat 12–4pm
